Super Line Buyer's Guide - Page 1

Super Lines: Is It For Me? - By Pescador

Spectra and braided lines have been around for decades, even before monofilament lines. But the introduction of clear monofilament lines all but caused extinction for them for many years. Through modern research and development, new species of super lines came through, re-revolutionizing the fishing line industry. With the new technology in super lines, coupled with new specially designed guides, many of the old problems associated with them have been alleviated. I will now attempt to explain the different aspects of super lines for those that are interested in trying them out to see if it is actually what they expected and are looking for.

There are two main types of super lines out today. They are Spectra and Dacron, but I will be concentrating more on Spectra and similar lines in this article. Some manufacturers claim that their super lines are not made with the same Spectra fibers as some of the other well known brands, so the term "super line" was adopted to categorize all of them. Dacron is an older material that is still in a lot of use today. In comparison to Spectra, it is generally thicker (but still thinner than monofilament at the same breaking strength) and has more stretch. But many of the characteristics of each are very similar, if not the same. The most common characteristics that are boasted by each manufacturer are:

  • Little to zero line stretch
  • Smaller diameter per line breaking strength as compared to monofilament
  • Long life expectancy (some boast up to ten years of use with proper care)
  • Little to zero stress on reel spool
  • Little to zero memory

The minimal line stretch puts the angler in almost direct contact with the bait used. This allows for almost incredible sensitivity for the angler. The smaller diameter of the line allows the angler to spool more line onto their reel, while maintaining the same breaking strength. Because of the nature of monofilament to stretch, when wound too tightly on the spool it can cause an amazing amount of stress to the sides of the spool. Sometimes this results in the spool almost exploding while fighting a strong fish. The minimal stretch of these super lines also alleviates this. And because of its minimal memory and abrasion resistance, these lines are expected to give the angler YEARS of use before the need to change them.
