Name: Arvin Reyes
Born On Date: 1976
Location: San Diego, CA
Started fishing: circa April 2001
Born in Portsmouth, Virginia to a sailor and his wife, I was a navy brat and an only child for almost 6 years. When my little brother was born, my father was ordered to assume his duty in San Diego, CA, so the whole family was relocated there and that is where the rest of my life began. It is also where most of my life has been spent, save for a few years in the Philippines for college, where I majored in Physical Therapy for the first year, and X-Ray Technology for the second, unfinished year due for return to the USA. Upon return to the States in May 1996 I waited for six months before joining the United States Navy and became a Hospital Corpsman (medic). I spent three and a half years onboard the USS John C. Stennis (CVN-74) serving through a tour around the world and one WESTPAC (both of which were 6 month continuous cruises). During these cruises I acquired my Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist designation, I was accepted into the Order of Magellan for circumnavigating the globe, and I became a Shellback for being one of the few people who have ever crossed the Equator by sea. At the end of my tour on the Stennis, I was accepted into Clinical Nuclear Medicine Technology School. I am currently stationed at the Naval Medical Center San Diego as a Nationally Certified Clinical Nuclear Medicine Technologist (Second Class Petty Officer - HM2).

My first memory of fishing is the time that my uncles took me to Shelter Island Pier in San Diego. I don't remember much about that trip except for getting in trouble for telling a "fishing story" to my parents about catching 30 fish, when there were only two or three fish caught hehehe. But the first fish I ever caught was a goldfish in my turtle pond in my parents' backyard when I was still a teenager. I took a staple and bent it into a hook, tied it to some thread, baited it with a little piece of carrot, and dropped it into the pond. I watched in amazement as the goldfish took the bait. Instinctively, I set the hook. A little too hard, actually, because the fish went flying into the air! It landed back in the pond and was fine. My very first catch and release!
I have had many hobbies through my short (so far) life. Among them:
drawing, street hockey, music (guitar, piano, and singing), billiards,
darts, and street racing, just to name a few. Each time I found
a new hobby, I put most of my time, attention, concentration,
and money into it to be the best that I could be. But for most
of these hobbies it seemed that I could only get to a certain
point and not be able to improve. This forced me to move on to
the next challenge in the search of recreational fulfillment.
And then came fishing. A whole new universe was then opened up
to me and a monster was born within.
The addiction started while I was stationed in Virginia, going to "Nuke Med" School, when a friend took me out freshwater fishing from shore. It took only that first ever bluegill to get me "hooked" for life. Reporting for my first assignment as a Clinical Nuclear Medicine Technologist, I came back to San Diego, where I discovered the world of saltwater fishing and all the joys and excitement of it. Though medicine is always going to be there as my calling to profession, I will retire someday. And when that happens, you can bet that I'm going fishing!
